Illuminations Classic Bowling Festival 2014

After 23 years of running this event we can safely say that apart from the slight drizzle in the evenings we had excellent bowling weather, and the fast greens led to some fantastic bowling around Blackpool and Thornton Cleveleys, and we would like to take the opportunity to thank every single one of you, new and familiar faces, for taking part once again at the Blackpool Illuminations Bowling Festival 2014, making the festival what it is today, and look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

This event was also the first since Ron Tillbrook took over the reins from Ray Morris as Referee co-ordinator, and it is safe to say that both he and all officials performed wonderfully in refereeing and making the holiday as enjoyable as possible.

For all the years of this festival taking place, we had never seen the greens bowl so fast due to this summer’s dry weather having an effect on them, but despite this the qualifying rounds saw some very interesting results, some great bowls, and a fantastic list of finalists due to play at the one and only Waterloo Bowling Green on the Finals Day.

Finals Day arrived quicker than a flash and kicking it all off with the Ladies Plate Pairs we had Maureen Morgan & Jenny Shone overcoming Carol Burns and Christine Lawton in a close game finishing  11-9 and in the Men’s  Les Haylor and Kenny McGranaghan became Champions (11) with Chris Lord and Chris Womersley (9) ending up Finalists. Both Champion Pairs received as an award a Bowls Bag each, courtesy of our sponsors, Taylor Bowls.

In the Consolations Finals we saw Brenda Walsh overcome Doris Cargill 15-6, and Steve Macmanus bowed out of the competition losing to Liam Lambert, ending with the score of 15-10, with the Champions receiving a set of Bowls each, sponsored  by Taylor Bowls.

The Mixed Pairs Final saw Liza Harrison and Barry Robinson bowl fantastically together and claim the win 15-8 over the experienced Keith Cheetham and Lillian Hall, making way for the Main Finals.

Despite bowling some of the best bowls we saw all week, Liza Harrison, having just won the Mixed Pairs, was not able to see off a fantastic display from our newly crowned Ladies Champion Lynne Rimmer in a game finishing 21-13.

In the Men’s Main, after reaching the Final last year, Barry Robinson went one better and was named Men’s Champion after playing this year’s Finalist Mark Bennett, in a game ending  21-5, in front of a cheering Waterloo crowd.

Closing off the Festival with the Awards Ceremony being held in the Ball Room at the Norbreck Hotel, Steve Rigby and Brian Duncan presented the awards, and made the announcement that as of next Spring,  in an aim to continuously improve the event, the festival organisers,  Esselle Sports, have chosen to add an extra half-days bowling to the event, meaning the Finals and Presentations will take place at the Waterloo Bowling Green on the following morning.
