Blackpool Spring Bowling Festival 2014

Here we are, after another fantastic weeks worth of bowling, celebrating our 25th Anniversary of the Spring Bowling Festival. Even with the change of venue and the small hiccup here and there over the years, we have always thrived to make it a success and as pleasurable as possible and as always, very happy to see familiar and new faces join us on this holiday.

Once again, with exception to a slight drizzle before Finals day we were blessed with good weather and perfect bowling conditions around the familiar greens around Blackpool and Cleveleys, and in particular of Bispham Conservative Club, which turned out to be a fantastic green after returning to it 18 years later. As usual, across the greens in the early stages of the festival, qualifiers for both singles and mixed pairs provided its usual mixture of expected and surprise results setting everything up perfectly for the finals.

As ever, Finals day was a glorious affair, providing a superb competition, at the forever improving Waterloo Hotel. Starting off the finals were the Plate Pairs, with Carol Burns and Christine Lawton overcoming Carol Wroe and Kath Brown. In the Mens, David Ashworth and Fred Roberts became Men’s Pairs champions after some fantastic bowling against Mick Coward and Peter Lee. On to our Consolation Finals, Karen Whitefoot provided a great winning game against Janet Piper, and Steve McManus overcame Dave Samways in a tense final. The Mixed Pairs provided some fantastic bowling from both pairs, ending with Neil Slater and Sue Tuffy winning the final against the experienced Peter Worfolk and Marjorie Haigh. In the Ladies’ main, Maxine Crompton bowed out of the competition to our newly crowned 2014 Champion, Julie Best. Last but not least, we come to our Men’s Finals, where, after many attempts over the years, Craig Shore finally won the competition after playing superbly against past champion Barry Robinson ending 21-12.

Finals Presentation, being hosted in the Ballroom of the Norbreck Hotel, provided us with fond memories of the last 25 years, many told by the Festival Organiser, Steve Rigby, and of course assisting him with presenting the prizes was none other than Brian Duncan. There was also the announcement that after many years of service that Ray Morris would be stepping down from his position of Referees co-ordinator, and handing over the reins to Ron Tilbrook, and he was warmly thanked by the participants and the organisers alike for his fantastic contribution to both Blackpool Festivals. Ray will continue to work as a referee on future events, so will not be lost entirely! Well done Ray!
