Cliffs Classic 2012

The months fly quicker as you get older and as usual, it is always a shock when the Cliffs Classic Festival is upon us once more. With the Queen’s Jubilee and the moving of the Bank Holidays, the usual first week of June slot was not available at the Cliffs this year, and this meant an unfortunate clash with the Isle of Man Festival. This prevented many regulars from attending the Cliffs, but they must have forgot that drinks were half price in Blackpool!

Again, despite an awful lead up, the weather turned glorious for the first four days of the Festival, and certainly when coupled with the excellent greens at Cleveleys WMC for the Mixed Pairs, and the Gardeners Arms and Raikes Hotel for the Singles, put everyone in good spirits for the week.

Monday was Mixed Pairs day with everyone on the same green to aid getting to know each other, not just for the Bowling, but for the Quiz night back at the hotel. With lunch available in the club, and the green proving a good test for all, the event whittled its way down to the quarter-finalists.

The Raikes Hotel, back to its best order, and aided by an amenable landlady, provided an historic back-drop, whilst the Gardeners Arms showed why it is regularly used as a County green – well done to both clubs for excellent venues. The Ladies Singles was looking very ‘Rochdalian’ with four out of the last eight ladies from there, and both events had Welsh representation in the quarter-finals.

Although Thursday didn’t set any sunshine records, after the first 45 minutes rain, the skies dried up, and remained rain-free for the rest of the day. Thus, the stage was set for three excellent finals, in particular the Ladies event where Carol Hartley came back from 10 – 15 to add the Cliffs title to her Blackpool Spring Festival success, and Dave Little continued his excellent form all week to take the Mens. County honours were evened out with Paul and Bernadette Toon taking the Pairs crown. There was even time for Brian Duncan to take on Irene Costello and Dave Collinson in two exhibition games!

Photographs of the Finals and Presentation Night were kindly donated by Andrew Claydon Photography and a superb Presentation dinner rounded a great week of great food, excellent company and substantial entertainment by the Cliffs.

Going home day was the wildest, stormiest day Blackpool had seen for quite a while – no wonder Elton John performed “Cancelled in the Wind” that evening – it was dreadful! Shows how lucky the Cliffs bowlers were! Booking for the 2013 event are already available – TEL: 01257  450991 or from this website, and the 50% off drinks offer will be with us again next year!
