Cliffs Classic 2013

For the regular Cliffs Classic attendees, if it wasn’t exactly trepidation, then it was more likely anticipation and concern that the Cliffs Hotel would never be the same again, after news that the Restaurant and Café Bar had received major overhauls had been forwarded to them prior to arrival in Blackpool for the 2013 Cliffs Classic.

It was true, the Cliffs would never be the same again, but it didn’t take long for guests to realise that the changes were for the better. The Café Bar had been made into an even more relaxing area to take a break, and the Restaurant had been expanded into the old ‘Dolly’s Bar’ area, and a central self-service area for breakfast, and for starters, soups, desserts and salad bar for dinner had been created offering far greater choice. This was an instant hit with all guests, as the décor, space and light in the new Restaurant combined with increased choice was a ‘wow’ with the whole group.

Bookings for 2103 were 50% up on 2012, due in part no doubt to the half-price drinks promotion throughout and also the decision to bowl in half day sessions in the Singles competitions, and with two venues for the Cliffs Classic Singles events at Jubilee Gardens and Carleton B.C. the event got under way. Glorious sunshine greeted all the bowlers on Monday morning and it remained all week (apart from a couple of hours cloud on Wednesday afternoon), with the temperatures in the 70’s throughout.

Wednesday’s Mixed Pairs gave bowlers two new tests at the Raikes or Gardeners Arms before it was Thursday, and on to the part-renovated Waterloo Hotel for Finals Day. The new shop was opened thanks to support from Taylor’s Bowls, and food and soft drinks available from the pub, with clear evidence all around of the work being done to improve the venue as a whole.

Brian Duncan came through two Exhibition games against Shirley Sykes from Saddleworth 9-7, and Keith Pinchbeck from Ossett 9-6, before the main event finals. Especially notable achievements were by Graham Oliver and Marie Sutcliffe claiming their third Mixed Pairs title in five years; Tony Kearns’ taking of the Mens Singles on his first visit to the Cliffs Classic ; and by Theresa O’Toole, who although losing in the Ladies’ Final to Ronni Lyon, had won every Singles game (11) en-route to that Final.
